  5. Troubleshooting

  6. Q: How can I report a bug ?
A: Use the bug form (available at
http://inforss.mozdev.org/bugs.html), and add it to the list. You can keep track of it from there too.

Q: When I drop new RSS on the icon, nothing append ?
A: Maybe the inforss repository is corrupted. Locate the inforss.xml file on your hard drive (in the default profile directory of Firefox) and delete it. Then restart Firefox, and try to drop another URL.

Q: The application does not display the news in the status bar ?
A: Go in the option dialog (menu - tool -extension - inforss - option), click on activity:on, and click on the "Apply" button.

Q: I have a "Your property file has a old version number" error popup when I start firefox. What append ?
A: There is a problem is version 0.8.4 and prior with feed using non latin alphabet. These make the main repository (inforss.xml) corrupted. When you see this popup, your old inforss.xml file is rename inforss_xml.inerror and a new default inforss.xml is generated. From there, you can readd your feeds or manually get them from the backup file. This problem is fixed in 0.8.5 version, but you still have to recreate your repository.

Q: I have the version 0.8.4 and everything was fine. I have upgraded to the 0.8.6 and I have some popup error (like nsIUTF8ConverterService.convertStringToUTF8 ...) when I start firefox and I can't see my feeds any more ?
A: There is a difference in the encoding of the repository between the 0.8.4 and higher. In order to fix this problem, you can open the inforss.xml file in a text editor (maybe force the encoding to ISO-8859-1), verify that the file is ok in the editor, and saved it using a "UTF-8, no BOM" encoding. This should help. If not, you can quit firefox, delete the inforss.xml file, start firefox and recreate your feed. They will be correctly encoded with the 0.8.6 version.

Q: infoRSS don't save the feed that I have added
A: Sometimes, there are some trouble with the current profile of Firefox; try to create a brand new profile to see if this fix the problem

Q: Sometime, users experiment a "repository has no properties" error. What does that means ?
A: This means that something went wrong when reading the repository. The best thing to do is to go to the option dialog, turn on all debug setting, restart FF, note all error popups and contact the author; It could be very usefull to locate the inforss.xml file on the hard drive and send it to the author. You can also delete the inforss.xml file and restart firefox. This also might append when there is a conflit with other extension. The version 0.8.7 and up should fix that.

Q: The extension slows down my browser, what can I do ?
A: The two main reasons are 1) scrolling eats a lot of CPU, especially at high scolling speed. Your can turn the scrolling off. 2) the refresh time. If you have a lot of different feeds to monitor, all active at the same time (in a group), and all with a little refresh time, it could also eat the CPU when refreshing. Try to adjust the refresh time to a proper value. By default this value is set to 2 min. Try to avoid to have all your feed set with the same value.

Q: I have set the tooltip on the headline with the "full article" option. When I move the mouse over an headline I see a mini browser, but I can't scrolling the page ?
A: Even if you see a mini browser, this browser have a tooltip behavior : when the mouse moves out, the tooltip disapears. If you have to see to full article and scroll, just click on the headline.

Q: I click on the "make current" button in the option dialog and nothing append ?
A: You have to validate with the "apply" or "ok" button any change in the option dialog, including the "make current" action.

Q: I'm having trouble with the repository, nothing is saved ?
A: It seems that the extension must be installed by the user-user himself, not an admin user on behalf the user.

Q: Each time I quit and restart FF, I see old headlines that I have already read ?
A: You have to check if the purge delay (option dialog) is not too small (ie. 1 day), or maybe the inforss.rdf is corrupted. In that case, just quit FF, delete the inforss.rdf file and restart FF.

Q: Firefox does not want to start or seems to be hang after the install of the extension ?
A: Some users seems to experiment this problem. I'm not able to reproduce it, so it's quite hard to work on it, but I was told that if you manually edit the inforss.xml file (in the profile directory of Firefox) et delete all entries except the first TAG and the last TAG (only 3 lines left), it fixes the problem.
UPDATE: The version inforss 1.0.1 should fix the problem.

Q: New version of Firefox (1.5.0.3 and upper) does not display the menu when I click on the main icon (earth) ?
A: The mouse event handling keeps changing from one version to another. In version inforss 1.1 a new option has been added in the advanced/main menu section. try the value 0 or -1.

  7. Security concerns

  8. Q: Can I add RSS feed from secure url (SSL) ?
A: Yes, if the url starts with "HTTPS", you will be prompt to enter your user account and password.

  9. Installing / uninstalling

  10. Q: How can I unstall this extension ?
A: In Firefox, just select the extension in the list of installed extension (menu > tool > extension) and click on "remove". In Mozilla or SeaMonkey, you have to locate the extension in the profile directory on the hard drive : "{f65bf62a-5ffc-4317-9612-38907a779583}", and remove it. You can also remove the inforss.xml and the inforss.rdf file at the same place, too.

The inforss project can be contacted through the mailing list or the member list.
